For what it's worth, this was a pretty common strategy in the days when record players had spindle-style record holders. The idea was supposed to be that you'd stack all three records on top of one another on top of this tall spindle -- sides 1, 2, and 3 facing up -- and as each record came to a stop, the next one would drop down, like a jukebox, and you'd get three (or more) sides of uninterrupted play. As you're imagining, though, this method scratches the heck out of vinyl, since each record is dropping on the previous one while the former is spinning, so there's friction marks all over. Thus, anyone who cared about their vinyl never used this method, and now that we're back to the "barbaric" practice of one record at a time, we have to do more record changing per side than ever before.
