davisuk I totally agree, this is one of the most overrated record in the audiophiles heaven but each time I hear it I'm impressed on how bad it's recorded. Maybe audiophiles love the ticking of glasses in the recording jazz club! There is, for instance, a japanese recording of the Modern Jazz Quartet in Japan - though it's not an emphasized, bombastic, sound as we are nowadays used - it sounds balanced, as it has to be.

Nothing personal

Very clear-sounding recordings of average performances and bland sounding instruments. the drummer constantly over-plays, is too loud, and takes away from a lot of the songs; the double bass sounds like an electric bass guitar and it is not played with significant ability. As a musician and a jazz fan I do not rate the performances - there are much better versions of these tunes played by much better musicians. From a production point of view the mix is poor (which is understandable to some degree as it is a live performance in a very small venue) and it detracts from the recording. "Audiophiles" love this record, which tells me they are more concerned with the fact you can hear the tip bell ringing and other needless minutiae rather than with the general performance, the ability of the musicians, and the mix.Give me a 1920s Louis Armstrong shellac over this anyday!

After all these years, it does amaze me the amount of people who still totally misunderstand what the real essence of this recording is all about , but here's a hint , it's not about the musicianship or the quality of the songs they play !

I agree that it sounds like a packed smokey venue, back when people were enjoying going out, smoking and drinking and generally speaking having fun.When I listen to some of those records (same for Sunday at the VV), I realize how gentrified the jazz scene has become over the years... part of the blame on 'serious' jazz players (some of them pretentious assholes like Keith Jarrett and the like) who decided that jazz was a serious music that required a silent venue.BTW looking at a calendar 14th and 15th December 1976 were a Tuesday and Wednesday, so the people attending these concerts were not the casual Stockholm weekenders, but people who were going out during the week to listen to some jazz.
