I am almost tempted to add "classic rock" to the list of styles above, genre pigeon holes into which this record, or this band, allegedly fits. Not that this record sounds like what you'd hear on your local classic rock radio station. But if you've ever heard the long freak-outs that Led Zeppelin played in the middle section on live versions of "Whole Lotta Love," or the more abstract sections of songs from Piper At the Gates of Dawn or Saucerfull Of Secrets, then you know---or will get---where BMD are coming from.

It's like they heard the version of Whole Lotta Love on The Song Remains The Same and said, "we don't need the lyrics part, or the riff or the guitar solos: let's throw everything out except the psychedelic freak-out in the middle and just concentrate on that. Then, let's stretch it out and live in it, expand it, and make it the length of a whole album. Better yet, a double album!"

Hopefully I'm not insulting the band or any of their fans, because I really like this record a lot and I'm sure I have a lot in common, musically, with many of their fans. Perhaps BMD see themselves as part of a more abstract musical continuum, with influences ranging from free-jazz to 20th Century classical to The Boredoms. Fine, fine, fine. But to whatever extent this record has its antecedents in any of those things, or things further out, to my ear, it is firmly rooted in late-60s and early-70s classic rock.

And that's cool with me. This is an A M A Z I N G record!
