Comments to album Bob Dylan - The Original Mono Recordings

Fri/14th/jun/‘19:Thnks for your the both of your replies. Where did each of your buy your boxes of these RKS cuts - from a US seller or otherwise? I ask b/c sealed copies are starting to pop up again, here n there, including at Acoustic Sounds. And they’re listed not at OOP/rare price points, but only moderately higher than the list price of the originally issued box. I wonder if any of these are also the RKS versions ...I’m also curious as to how the sellers k-n-o-w that their “Mint” i.e. presumably sealed boxes which they have listed under this particular entry indeed contain the RKS cuts?!!? I’d say they actually don’t and cannot know and are only presuming so. If there’s a way to discern, please detail, thnx.Lastly, if any of you have had the opportunity/luxury of A-B’ing the orig Marino cuts with the RKS cuts, can you hear any difference? To reiterate, I actually don’t like what Marino did with Zimmy’s voice. It’s too harsh. On my original UK CBS mono Highway 61 Revisited, w/orange, rough textured label and flipback-design cover, Zimmy’s voice is conspicuously smoother. I’ll admit that on the Marino remasters the bass is bumped, bolder, and the overall instrumentation is clearer, distinct, and not as smeared together (due to tube cut?) as on the my UK. And the pressing quality of the Sony is divine, very quiet. The same goes for Freewheelin’: Zim’s voice is mastered smoother on my OG US mono than on Marino’s remaster. Can you guys also hear what I’m discerning?Although it’s really just the exquisite sleeve construction and peerless art reproduction that is propelling me to re-shop for the Sony box, it’d comforting to know that the sonics have been improved by Ryan Smith. Nice packaging alone couldn’t justify a $200+ re-purchase.

Sun. 11th March 2018Can anyone confirm that this 3rd iteration of the Original Mono Recordings vinylboxed set actually exists? I still have yet to see an eBay or Discogs seller list one. Please correct me if I have misunderstood what this listing is: the exact same packaging as both the first edition (numbered on the rear bottom right corner) and the second edition (NOT numbered), particularly the individual album sleeves being absolutely beautiful, thick cardboard, with exquisite image reproduction; vinyl being the same heavy weight as in the earlier two versions; the same large booklet included in the earlier versions; but Matrices indicating that Ryan K. Smith, not George Marino, cut the lacquers (“RKS”) for these pressings. So ... would a seller have to open his box and examine the Matrices to confirm whether his boxed set is this RKS version? Are there no other signs on the outer box to determine this? I’m looking to re-buy my recently sold numbered box, just to have again those extraordinarily reproduced Covers - absolutely beautiful! But I’m not crazy about Marino’s remastering; I’m leaning toward RKS’s remastering, as I like what I’ve heard he’s done with other reissues. So, ideally: Ryan’s cuts + the exact same physical packaging as the other two boxed sets. Does anyone have proof this exists? Thanks.

moomalooWhat puzzles me more is how the sales price on this multi-vinyl set could range from only £5 to £25...?! Looking at the descriptions of what was sold, it looks like those were either LPs taken out of the set and sold separately, or some other issue that somehow got merged into this one. I don't think it was ever the case of the whole box selling for 25 GBP, but rather single or double records.
GEL
I have proof! - I own one of these sets. Same packaging with Marino mastering credit to the rear slip cover insert but with RKS hand etched into the run-off. What puzzles me more is how the sales price on this multi-vinyl set could range from only £5 to £25...?!
Dakora
Hi, I have this set and it is indeed as described, with the matrix numbers as mentioned, and unnumbered. The sleeves are thick cardboard, high quality and good image reproduction. The back sheet says "Mastered for LP by George Marino".
Anaragelv
I'm glad you asked that question. If you look at the sales of whatever was actually offered for sales for the third iteration it looks like individual records were sold, but there is no indication of what records. Also, did Ryan Smith actually put his initials on every side of every record runout in the "set"? The more I look at it the fishier it looks. Indeed, why would they issue two of what is purported to be essentially the same thing on the same date? Numbered vs. unnumbered. It does look odd.
