Comments to album Dizzy Gillespie - In The Beginning
Vital Beast
This is an excellent collection of early Gillespie, and, with the 2 CD set of his RCA-Victor recordings, ought to be heard by every serious jazz collector. It is long overdue for one of those tasty Japanese CD issues.

The various tracks are, for the most part, not rare, but the reissues have mainly been ratty, random selections, some of them taken from scratchy 78s. It is great to have all these in one place, and without the scratches.

This issue has an Orrin Keepnews flavor to it, though he isn't mentioned in the notes. The album is from Fantasy in 1973, and Orrin was associated with Fantasy for many years. As producer at Riverside, he issued some excellent recordings, many of them by major artists. But his reissues (for example, the complete Riverside recordings of Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, and the 1990s RCA-Victor Fats Waller CD sets) always have errors and omissions.

In this case, the omission of the February 9, 1945 version of "Groovin' High" (the one with Dexter Gordon instead of Bird) is bad. That version is hard to find. And why not add "Too Much Weight", to complete the September 16, 1950 session?

The tracks are not in session order. Why not? The personnel listing is hard to follow because of that and the fact that "cumulative" listings are used (that is, A, B, and C replace D, E, F from the previous session, and then G, H, I replace J, K, L); those are always hard to follow.

The titles on Side 3 are wrong in the notes. The LP has 1. Things To Come, 2. Good Dues Blues, 3. One Bass Hit, Part II, 4. Our Delight, 5. Ray's Idea.

So, sloppy selection and production.

Don't let these niggles distract you from the music, which is excellent and essential.
