Comments to album Eat Static - Dead Planet
Kendis
Eat Static masters various styles of rave music as if it was easy. Dead Planet tackles a wide range of BPM and style, I'm very fond of the full on crazy "Voodoo Doll" which samples one of my childhood favorite Scooby Doo films.

“Dead Planet / Human Upgrade” is the ninth studio album of EAT STATIC, the British cult purveyors of Psy-Trance electronic music. The project was launched in Frome, Somerset in 1989 by Merv Pepler and Joie Hinton who met as a drummer and keyboardist (respectively) for the instrumental Space-Rock legend, OZRIC TENTACLES. Hinton left the group in 2008, and EAT STATIC has turned into a solo vehicle of Merv Pepler. Created in 2013-2014 and released as a Double-CD Set through Pepler’s own Mesmobeat Records (after almost seven-year period of silence), “Dead Planet / Human Upgrade” is the first album of EAT STATIC without Hinton’s contribution. Though, the album features quite a few notable guests (in order of appearance): Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy (aka System 7), Steve Everitt (aka Alien Progeny), Robert Smith (of The Cure), Jeremy Van Kampen (aka Laughing Buddha), Robert Heynen (ex- Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia) and others. In fact, there are two quite different albums within “Dead Planet / Human Upgrade” set (10 tracks and over 70 minutes each): the “Dead Planet” album which presents upbeat-electronic music, and the “Human Upgrade” album which presents downbeat-electronic music. The former has the old Eat Static atmosphere, more clear sci-fi feeling, cheesy samples that actually fit in to the music really well, harsh synths, and strong danceable trans-rave beats. The latter is in a more relaxed and dreamy style, with chilling melodic punctuations, floating surreal ambiances, occasional eastern haze flavor, and more sophisticated rhythmic decor which still has a lot of power and energy. Both albums are basically instrumental, except of one actual song – it’s “In All Worlds” performed by Robert Smith on “Dead Planet” CD. All in all, its a very worthy set. All tracks are at least good and there are some wonderful standouts in both “Dead Planet” and “Human Upgrade” albums. This release is recommended not only for fans of the tear-out Psy-Electronic with the crazy cyberpunk leads and pulpy sci-fi samples, but also for lovers of intelligent, glitchy and mellow Space-Age music.

I wished this album was released on vinyl. Maybe a 4xLP soon?

The experimentation, the creativity and happily familiar Eat Static vibes.... A breathe of fresh-air still in 2015!

A massive double album! 'Dead planet' is a full powered stormer with some very creative tracks full of twists and turns and some great 'Static Alien' samples. The Robert Smith vocal works really well, a great collaboration. No fillers here, the effort Merv has put into each track is a true labour of love, as usual, where a static tracks begins, it rarely finishes, mutating into something completely different. Full of energy and fight from start to finish... 'Human Upgrade' is the second album and is the slowed down and deeper one to listen to when chilling out. Again the production is of very high quality and there are some amazing tracks which are a pleasure to listen to. Simply put this is a triumph, Eat static remain one of the best and most original makers of electronic music. I recommend this highly and it will need to be played again and again to take on the full 20 tracks and digest all those brilliant noises. Looking forward to that!! Thank you Merv and everyone else involved in the making of this...
