After a five year absence, the Gorillaz’s release of the album “Plastic Beach” showcases a completely different blend of music by the group. While the music on their first two albums was a mixture of alternative rock and hip hop, their third and latest album incorporates a wide array of artists, from Snoop Dogg to the National Orchestra for Arabic Music, and a heavy emphasis on electronic sound. Although the number of guest appearances is outrageously high, the themes of the album are conveyed by the arrangement of constructed sounds; primarily an overzealous use of synthesizers. Thus, despite the rapid attack of hip hop in some songs, i.e. “Superfast Jellyfish” or “White Flag,” and the emphasis on the vocals of Bobby Womack, in “Stylo” and “Cloud of Unknowing, ”Plastic Beach” is essentially an electronic album, for the glue which holds the album together and accentuates the vocals is the arrangement of synthetic sounds.

The album involves a variety of sounds, from the orchestral components in “White Flag” and “Sweepstakes,” to the audio clips of beach sounds, like seagull calls and waves crashing, in “Orchestral Intro,” however it is the use of synthesizers which defines the overall sound of the album. The track “Empire Ants” begins with a slow, melancholy voice over a minimal sonic backdrop, however a chirping synthesizer evolves until eventually the Gorillaz drop a strong, electro pop baseline. The manner in which the song develops from a slow tempo with a focus on the vocals to a strong baseline with a dance groove feel truly demonstrates the appeal of the Gorillaz, thus, “Empire Ants” is a personal highlight from the album. “Glitter Freeze” displays the group’s emphasis on constructed sounds and ability to form beats out of such sounds. While in the introduction the song is a clash of synthetic sounds, the madness of noise surprisingly turns into an interesting beat, yet by the end of the song the beat has disappeared and the madness of noise returns. Popular favorites from the album include the single “Stylo” and the heavy hip hop track “Superfast Jellyfish,” however the tracks “Rhinestone Eyes” and “Empire Ants” both deserve an audience.

Although the past Gorillaz albums have been extremely different from contemporary alternative rock and hip hop, after one listens to the tracks of “Plastic Beach” the ingenuity and novelty of the album is undeniable. However the album’s distinctiveness doesn’t derive from a new technology or software, but rather from the combination of sound types. The Gorillaz supplement all types of vocals, orchestra excerpts, and natural sounds, with electronic music; each track on the album has unique aspects, like the drone of Snoop Dogg or a rap battle between Bashy and Kano, yet all share and a strong electronic foundation. Thus, “Plastic Beach” deserves its place in the history of electronic music alongside Karlheinz Stockhausen. Just as Stockhausen was successful in combining synthetic sounds and recorded sounds, the Gorillaz have combined the genres of hip hop, alternative rock, and pop with electronic music to create the new experience which is “Plastic Beach.”

While tracks such as “Stylo” have achieved acclaim as a single, “Plastic Beach” is a complete musical experience, thus listening to all the tracks is essential. Admittedly, the Gorillaz’s third album is very different from their previous work; however the change is undoubtedly in the right direction. Though “Plastic Beach” may not be what the audience initially expects, the resulting electronic experience is captivating.
