Here is a recording of the first Ikon concert at a now-defunct venue in Melbourne, The Arthouse. Most bands played their first gig there. It's where we played our first pub gig as Death In The Dark in 1989.
For the first Ikon gig, we were still actually advertised as Death In the Dark. Maurice had only been playing with us for a little over a month. i remember Maurice saying during soundcheck that night, "I think we need a new name". a few names were suggested and we went on with the night, but I didn't really give the idea of a new name much thought. During the show, after Michael announced "this next track is called 'The Lost'", he said "and we are called Ikon". We looked at each other, confused. I had no idea that this was what the name was going to be. And there it was. It stuck. We never gave it any thought and it doesn't mean anything in particular. It was just a name. we were four young boys having fun, writing and playing music.
This CD contains the only full recording of our performance. the video that a family friend filmed has no sound and the recording I made is lost somewhere and only contains half of this show. this recording was taped at the bar by a friend, Paul Cook, on his Walkman. You can hear the cash register and people ordering drinks in between songs - that was The Arthouse. Mainly friends had turned up to see us play. As far as my memory serves me, it was the only time we performed the songs 'We Walk alone', 'Tomorrow I think I'll Die' and 'Solitude' live. As an added bonus, we have included three tracks from the first rehearsal with Maurice in late October 1991.
