Dead Samurai

Take the deep spirituality of Carlos Garnett's Black Love, James Mtume's Rebirth Cycle and the vamping tunes from Kawaida, then cross it with the funkier elements of albums like Eddie Henderson's Realization and Jeremy Steig's Energy and you're right in that magical zone where music just elevates your life, that's what this album does all on it's own. This is deep spiritual jazz fusion at its best. Hardly surprising as this album is basically Gary Bartz with a few of his NTU Troop guys, and Chris Hinze and half his crew. I suppose when you've got a meeting of minds like that you're bound to get some amazing chemistry going on. My only fault with this album is that a few of the tunes on the B side feel like they're going to be monster grooves, like "Rise On" for example, here these guys sound like they're just going to jam on until the early hours, but these tunes have been edited to less than five minutes. I reckon this should have been a double album, and the band not have had to work to the time constraints of a single vinyl release. Other than that, this is totally killer stuff.
