Oldschool Terrorists - I'll On A Posse FLAC

Ever noticed the mistake on the cover? I'll On A Posse makes no sense in English, the unfortunate apostrophe is an embarrassing oversight by Rotterdam Records.

The A1 and B1 tracks are written by Guido and Peter Pernet, better known for their music on K.N.O.R Records and many other projects. Guido Pernet's list of aliases is impressive. The title track takes its name and sample from Public Enemy's title track, Yo! Bum Rush The Show. Not sure if its coincidental, but the target symbols on the cover are the same as Public Enemy's famous target design. Ill On A Posse is one of those tracks that starts basically half speed, I can imagine people playing the record for the first time thinking if they were playing the record at the wrong speed. With a nice synth simmering away, about a third into the track it shoots straight to 180 bpm, fairly good synth melody and high speed hi-hats. An above average Gabber track. This Is How It All Started is a far better track. It's slower Hardcore, so the punchy kickdrum is a bit more noticeable here, plus the breakbeats are always welcome. It does sound like a modification of the Paradox track on Ruffex (great record by the way!) but it still sounds OK, I quite like the simple acid riff in the middle. Solid track in general, because of its speed, it was great to play alongside the New Style Hardcore of the late 90's.

A2 and B2 are written by Robin Van De Wiel, who was the best part of Old School Terrorists. Heavily influenced by Neophyte, he definitely had talent. A bit hard to justify that statement since It's Like That is bland. The track title and sample comes from Run-DMC's It's Like That, a year before Jason Nevins remixed it and made it a worldwide hit song. Too repetitive, which is a shame, the cut up synth riff in the middle with the Ya Kid K sample from Spin That Wheel by Hi Tek 3, are actually good. However, Shake That is the best track on the vinyl. It starts off with some heavy Neophyte-esque kickdrums, that seems to have a delayed echo sound effect, similar to What's This DJ by Ultimate S.T (great song by the way!). The main synth is quite good and has a higher pitch to it, but it's the majority of the middle section I enjoy. Possibly sampling an older piano House track, there's a lovely piano melody, always puts a smile on my face, especially with those Neophyte drums. It could almost be considered Happy Hardcore.

These three producers were all involved in other releases together between 1996 and 1997, this record is probably my favourite of all the music they made.
