Sgnelkab is the soundtrack to travelling in hyperspace.

A1: Electro. Quality hook that's quick to establish itself played it the lower and upper ends of the scale simultaneously. Instant and likeable unfortunately the last minute is a bit of a synthbase tangent that fails. You'll have to be quick to use it but it will put a smile on your face. [NINE]
A2: Electronic. Has that off kilter Lo-Fi Boards of Canada attraction. Even the vocal sample has echoes of their Orson track. Not an obvious pick but really does it for me. Trails off a bit at the end though. [NINE]
A3: Electro. More conventional with it's straight minimal electro beats but that chordy synth main and bass is dynamite. Some other worldy vocals and electro stabs add to the mix. A bit of extra production or a Garnier mix and we could have been onto a monster but lets be happy that we've anything at all. [NINE]
A4: Techno (Dub). Fine chordy synthwork and a funky dubby bassline catch the ear. Bongo's help control the pacing. Initially slightly confusing breakdown changes the direction with a complicated synthloop but this works well up until the point it wants to reprise the initial chordy synths and the transistion doesn't work very well in that it just cuts one takes a break and returns to the original. Some naivety in the production again holds back a track with bags of promise. [NINE]
B1: Techno. Initially dissappointing as it just playes out as a straight fairly minimal track albeit decent but just at breakdown there's a squigely synthloop added that's layered and a little effected. It doesn't amount to a hill of beans as there are sufficent numbers of tracks in this style that do it better but at least the imagination is there. [EIGHT]
B2: Techno. To quick to be.., but has some House sensibilities. Fine funky bassline and minimal but effective piano stabs. There are however pacing issues as there is too much downtime where the track isn't progressing or building on it's easily good enough foundations. [EIGHT]
B3: Hip-Hop. Superb loop that with some competent vocal could be a classic but unfortunately it's all instrumental here and the loop is just messed around with, cut, then reinroduced in a lesser form. Promise but no cigar. [SEVEN]

*this E.P. shows that Skatebård has buckets of talent but the lack of knowledge of track structure and need for pacing and progression holds back virtually every track here from being something genuinely essential.

Actually this record was released as a twelwe-inch, not an LP, the first 12" in the world with 7 tracks and a gatefold:)

Skateboarding was a crime (in Norway) UNTIL 1989, from 1980. Although I don't know the exact date the ban was lifted.

Really interesting facts: The bubble jacket is of brand: Fila.
And the Elka Solist pictured in the gatefold was bought in 1995 for 500 Norwegian Kroner. The record was printed at GZ Digital Media.
THOMAS
5 star rating only for the 'Sgnelkab' track, which is a totally beautiful techno track, moody and minimal in its approach, but with enough punch to cause serious damage on the floor. A devastating drive throughout, with heavenly tones after the break completing the picture.
Really lovely and more than worth buying the whole LP for.

The track was used by Andre Galluzzi on his 'Im Garten' mix-CD on Taksi.
