Sea Last is about time and memory – how one place, so familiar and such a part of one's life, can be so different year after year, and yet remain seemingly unchanged. Sea Last was created as a two-part project consisting of photography and a sound piece, with this book being the final materialization – one unique object in a limited edition.
Sea Last was inspired by the stillness and timelessness of the ocean. The photographs were taken on a beach in Venice, Florida that I have been visiting every year of my life since I was born. The place is intensely familiar to me, yet the tides and power of the ocean change the landscape every year. It is always the same, yet constantly changing. I am drawn by the early mornings, the emptiness of the beach, and the quiet water, and often use this time for creative inspiration.
The musical portion of Sea Last is released on a 3" CD, containing one roughly 19-minute piece, that is attached in the back of the book. The music is quiet and slow, gentle, empty, like the mornings at the water. -- Taylor Deupree, 12k June 2008.
