Comments to album The Moody Blues - To Our Childrens Childrens Children

Again, The Moody Blues take off on sonic adventure into space, using minor key tonalities and psychedelic meanderings to fuel this journey.  With the album deeply inspired by the moon landing during the summer of it’s release [1969], the album stood at the door of a new decade, with the Summer of Love breathing its last breaths, and the quality of lysergic diminishing just as quickly.  To Our Children’s Children’s Children would prove to be the final voyage of the holy trinity, which included On The Threshold of a Dream [1969] along with In Search of the Lost Chord, all dynamic albums that were outwardly reaching in their concept and musical attitude, each being a comfortable uncomplicated stepping stone for the previous, and should be view as a collective concept.  There are those who would attempt to place the 1970 release of Question of Balance into this collection, though Question of Balance is entirely about questions and balances, more of an inward journey, finding a balance in the new decade, while concerned with looking over one’s shoulder at what ‘was’ rather than being about what ‘is.’I would be leaving for Viet Nam in another month, there seemed to be so much I needed to do before I left, people to see, places to go.  There was a series of packing and repackings, my pile of albums got thinned out and thinned out again until I had no choice but to hastily make cassette tapes, a burden that I placed on a dear friend whom I did not realize was in love with me, and as each day ticked away it got harder and harder for him to say so.  What did I know, I was only eighteen, totally absorbed with this step I was taking, fearing that I’d made a mistake, yet unwilling to waver.  He would sit on the floor each day with a new pile of cassettes, labeling them perfectly right up to the last minute when we walked to the plane together.  We didn’t kiss, he only said that he’d see me when I got back, and yes, twenty-six months later he was there, and we’ve never been apart since. This truly was the album for this period of my life, Viet Nam might just as well have been the moon, and while the album is not the best of this holy trinity, it is filled with a sense of awe, of discovery, of shedding old skin, old ways, of making room for the future, as the door was opening in so many ways … as if this were the record the Moody Blues were making for some future generation to discover. The album is finely textured and layered with a journeymen’s passion, steeped with hypnotic intoxication and ethereal delights that go down easy.  Unlike the previous two outings, this gem is not designed for candle flickering nocturnal lingerings under the stars.  To Our Children’s Children’s Children seems to have been designed for the late evening, at that moment between the day and the night, with the moon on one horizon, and the sun on the other, perfectly balanced, ready to take the listener just about anywhere they desired to go.  Most delightful was that this was music that nurtured not just the soul, but the mind, a comfortable series of songs that would become part of the musical landscape of my very being. So much has changed over the years, the skin on the back of my hands is not nearly as smooth as it once was, nor am I the skinny girl with the perpetual breeze in her hair … though I tell you with all honesty, as I watch my hands drop this record onto my turntable, my skin has never looked better, and the adventures on which this record have ridden with me, well they’re made up of the dreams of a lifetime.Review by Jenell Kesler
I just wanted to say that was an extremely personal review of this release and I like the fact you made a comparison to the previous and post album Moody Blues releases in that time period. This is a gem of an album and I am just recently re-visiting this bands early catalog because....well I like Haywards voice and Pinders beautiful orchestrations on the mellotron! Thanks for the review!
I was just telling my wife how moved I am by this review. This came out 13 years before I was born; my dad was 23 and my mom was a sophomore in high school and while both are music lovers, neither listen to the Moody Blues. Ironically, or coincidentally I suppose, I got into the Moody Blues around senior year of high school, 1999...my best friend's dad was a Vietnam vet and the Moody Blues meant a lot to him in the time period you mention. We used to listen to the Greatest Hits cd while getting high, not saying a word to each other for the duration of the album. Though you and I are hearing the exact same thing through our speakers, we are in very different places; I know where the music takes me and I can only imagine where it took you. I listen with wonder...and wonder about all those who loved this the way I do but in real time, in 1969. This album seems to be to be a product entirely of the times and for those of us who weren't there, that's very much appreciated.
Jenell - Loved all your Moody Blues reviews, top effort, brought a huge smile 2 this kiwi boys dial, t'was a great read & most entertaining, reliving them colourful times from that golden era of intelligent music, we were certainly blessed 2b experienced & alive in the day # ... thank ya kindly.
Thank you sincerely for posting. Amazing how intensely the best music insinuates itself into our entire lives, isn't it!
That was a great review, thank you!I'm a massive Moody Blues fan (34 here) and this and In Search of the Lost Chord are at the top for me (their first 7 - 9 are amazing).
