How has nobody commented on this early west coast classic?Unknown DJ was one of the pioneers of L.A. rap both with his early singles and his record label Techno Hop which was responsible for many great releases.Although '808 Beats' generally gets more attention 'Let's Jam' was always my personal favourite, I remember being so happy when I finally got a copy of the 12" back in about 1990 a good 5 years after its release.Unknown has a very distinctive voice and has an ability to deliver a rap that holds your attention and listen to every word. The raps are complimented by a beatifully smooth underlying synth, which kind of reminds me of an 80s Nile Rodgers Chic. The final part of the record is a breakdown of beats, vocoder and scratching, heavy beats and funky as hell. The picture cover was done by Lyrrad like many of the west coast releases and is one of his best pieces of work.Overall this is a high quality release in every way, one of the best from that early L.A. electro era and it has stood the test of time. If you don't have it, you need it.
Agreed. This is slightly underrated compared to 808 Beats. 808 Beats is very good, but this is smooth and quite brutal at the same time. The drum workout on the breakdown is immense. A personal fave. Should have received more attention.
