This clear vinyl 12" is the only UK 12" (from the 3 currently known variants i.e. 2 other UK black vinyl 12" pressings) that actually plays the 7:58 mix, as stated on the label. The other 2 pressings feature the shorter 7:35 mix. Perhaps the reason for this is that this clear vinyl version was pressed at 'Damont' and as such, their mastering of the vinyl from available tapes could theoretically differ from the pressings undertaken at other plants? Hence, it seems likely that indeed, the clear vinyl pressing holds the intended full 12" "extended version" and that the "Townhouse" mastered black vinyl pressings are merely an edit of that full version (probably mistakenly so). Note that the "Extended Version" of "We Came To Dance" that is featured on the 1998 "Extended Ultravox" CD also carries the 'shorter' mix, clocking in at 7:35. I do not own the German 12" single so cannot comment on the actual duration featured on that pressing.
So does the extended version at 7:38 would still include the over-modulation at 7:16?
I also own a German 12” which is same mix as the UK clear vinyl 12”.I believe these were initial pressings, both of which contained an overmodulated “da da da” at 7:16. I suspect this was subsequently removed on subsequent “non-Damont” UK 12” mastered by Townhouse resulting in the shorter extended version.
I think this is the only german pressing of this song on 12", but I'll keep it anyway and even more so because I now know this pressing has the rare 7:58 version on it!
Hi. Thanks for the info. I can't comment on the rarity, but certainly, if there was another German pressing of shorter length, then it certainly makes yours very desirable!
The German 12" release that I own is 7:58 long, so i guess that's quite rare! This release: https://www.discogs.com/Ultravox-We-Came-To-Dance/release/556721
