Uschi Classen, having long been a supporting player to Ashley Beedle and his cohorts, finally steps into her own. <I>Soul Magic</I> is her first album, and it stays true to its title. The tracks here are steep in nu-soul, downtempo vibes and good feeling. The production value is top-notch, smooth and sweet as Godiva chocolate. “Dizzy Heights” will have you spinning along with the sultry vocal delivery by Eska. She also handles the larger-than-life vocals of Kimra with ease, managing to contain the diva, rather than let her overtake the song. The second half of the album is devoted more to instrumentals, all deliciously groovy. Classen has been in the shadows for too long; I’m glad she decided to take a spotlight for herself.
