Michael Fremer is responsible for the reputation this rare two record set and it being as desireable as it has become. Fremer has been raving about this album and begging for someone to reissue it for years. In 20 years of record collecting, I have only seen two copies for sale and I bought both of them. This is truly a rare record and I suspect that the rarity is due in part to it not selling well to begin with especially given that it is a double. Fremer called this one a hit, I suspect, for a number of reasons. First, it is an amazing "live" recording and second it has a lineup that is insane. Looking at the liner notes names like Howlin’ Wolf, Koko Taylor, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Freddie King and a host of others leave one, mouth agape, mumbling WOW!

The Classic Records reissue marks the first reissue of this title ever. We obtained the original two track masters from the Atlantic vaults and the anticipation, as Bernie Grundman aligned the tape machine, in preparation to remaster was enormous. The tapes, which had not been played in 28 years, sounded incredible. By comparison with the original LP which was quick compressed the tapes sound more open and more "live". The LP was obviously bandwidth limited on top and bottom. The Classic reissue will restore the bass foundation and high frequency ambience that is missing on the original LP.

A few highlights include Koko Taylor’s version of Wang Dang Doodle. All I will say is "The Girl can sing!" The Dr. John performance of "Walk on Guilded Splinters", whatever that means, is so soulful that it makes your head start to move back and forth in time with the groove. As gravely as Dr. John’s voice is, he still has a certain silky sense of timing with the percussion unit and backup singers. This is New Orleans meets soul meets funk with an african beat – Dr. John near his peak! If you like blues guitar and want to hear the man that the so called "Guitar Gods" grabbed a few licks from, check out the Hound Dog Taylor solo guitar show that starts side one. It is all downhill, in a good way, from there.

If you had to have one live blue record then this would surely be a strong contender. Stay tuned for an interview with Mosaic Records owner Michael Cuscuna who, on staff at Atlantic in 1972, produced this tour de force blues bash that is not to be missed!
