July 8 1996: In the beginning there was cheese, and on the eighth day of July Gabby Colombi created UMA, an alternative to the swelling seas of commercial dance; a lifestyle label dedicated to clubbing and club music. Who better to have as their first artist than Junior Vasquez (New York's most renowned club DJ). Amazingly (thanx to JJJ) the hard tribal house rhythms of If Madonna Calls was catapulted into the ARIA Top 100, further blurring the boundaries of "commercial club dance". From then on, there was no looking back.
Label managers Gabby and Anthony Colombi, went about establishing a credible base of trax and range of merchanise. Artists ranged from Italy's Dreamhouse king Gigi Agostino, to the New York house duo of Little Louie Vega and Eric Morillo (Lil Mo Ying Yang), Italy's club masters Sueno Latino, Germany's Top 10 klub kids Red 5, Ibiza's Express of Sound, Holland's Movin' Melodies and more. In the last year they have licensed trax from a variety of highly credible club labels including Strictly Rhythm, Pan Pot Productions, Dance Street Germany, Movin' Melodies Productions, Mantra (Expanded Music) Records and more.
"Our aim has always been to focus on the clubbers and musical styles running through clubs at a particular time. We want to go that extra mile and trying to get every mix possible. If that costs us more, then so be it. Our commitment has always been to the DJ's, clubbers and underground radio, and providing them with choice. We often have to negotiate with several companies in several different territories for the one track just to get every mix in the world; but in the end if ther's choice, its worth it."
