The "word" has become an increasingly important part of today's music. Writers are trying to get it all down on paper - while performers strive to make it heard. Few are doing both as successfully as Zager & Evans.
From out of Nebraska, Denny and Rick have emerged with one of the hottest records of '69 and with it a fresh approach to the conscience and heart of the listener. Much like "2525," which opened a sobering door to the future, the boys are into more thought-provoking analyses in this, their first album. "Taxi Man" and "Woman" should bear this out. You'll be introduced to an unfortunately not unfamiliar type who calls himself "Fred" and a chick named "Cary Lynn Javes" whom I still haven't psyched.
Warm, personal experiences are a prominent part of the Zager & Evans expression and they touch on these with a poignancy that moves the most casual listener. At least one of their stories should relate to a quiet moment experienced somewhere in your past. All in all, the Zager & Evans album offers a broad but concise view of two guys with something important to say.
